A 5.3 is in the same family as the ls1. They are the same generation block which is why I mentioned the 5.3 and asked about budget. As for the price of each it depends on the area. I was speaking from personal experience and my area. Each area will have different prices.

I must've been thinking wrong, I thought he was comparing 5.7 to 5.7...

I see where you were goin with it though, I personally like the 4.3 for a cheaper build idea. They'll give better gas mileage than the small blocks and if the internals are upgraded to forged they can take a hard beating. I think I've said this before, but there are guys running s-10 extremes with stock internals fueled with a 100 shot nitrous  Think about how much torque that little v-6 is movin if they came 280 tq stock  ... & 100 shot is rated at the wheels

i said ls1. i just gave my input on what I thought just like everybody else. I didnt know I wasnt allow to express myself.

Okay, express yourself. But the question was LT1 or LS1 and I don't see how a post about a 5.3 helps answer that question.

He also never said anything about just wanting a 5.7. A 5.3 is in the same family.

I understand guys. But when people say 'LS1' it 99.99999% of the time means 350. We can get particular but I personally have never heard anyone with a 5.3 call it an LS1 even if it were in the same family. They just call it a 5.3 or 327 (even though it's not quite a 327)

i read an article on a 5.3 build up in a mag about a year ago. cam and head swap was making good power on the cheap. esp since it sounds like he wants a 90's fi motor on a budget. id say good suggestion.

I think the 4.3 would be a waste unless he does the nitro like you said or twin turbo. If he is going the carb route then he may just get the ls1 or even the lq9.

... I must not be understanding this question. A cam and head swap in an lt1 is a similar price as a 5.3 swap. And you're getting more power for cubic inches. If an LT1 can be had for cheaper than a 5.3 (LS1 version) then I'm lost here. Also if the plan was to upgrade heads and cam, why not just buy a real LS1 in the first place :?

Well, since he is on a budget, wouldn't a 5.3 possibly be cheaper to get since the demand is not as high? I am sure he could still get good power out of it with not going broke.

It could be, but to tell you the truth I haven't seen any newer cheap 5.3's or ls1's... ever that I can think of. Around where I live demand for those engines is still pretty high. Don't get me wrong I think the 5.3 is an awesome engine, my buddy has one in his new crew cab silverado... (which I walked on the hwy in my 4.3 silverado )

But I can buy a whole friggin running caprice from a police impound/auction for 1500$ or less... with a very nice & decent mileage LT1

I am not sure. I guess it all comes down to what the market is like in your area. At the pull a parts by me I can find plenty of lt1s from caprices, wagons, sometimes Camaros, and you can get them for less than $200. But I never see any ls1 engines in this junkyard. There are other yards that carry them, but you will pay the price for them.
