Part of the problem is the platform. It’s a little old and the spammers know the tricks to spam the ykw out of it. Had that same problem here more than once. [has Chinese university spammer flashbacks]
I was on Malibu racing in the early 2000s. Maybe 2001-02. There used to be a guy who posted under the name Little Red Wagon. I don't remember too many others. I remember the Canadian site too. Hard to believe that was close to 20 years ago now
To be fair, all my forums are getting a crapton of registration attempts by spambots (known bad IPs/email domains/etc.). Somebody's trying hard, that's for sure. So I'm not surprised at all its getting pounded. Just how it is.
As of now the registration function is disabled so it should be good now
update: I have the files/database in my hands and I'm working to get it going on my server. looks like a few incompatibility issues and things that need updating to get running properly but so far so good. The domain is in the process of being transfered. If you go there and the forum is up and running again (even partially) then its finished. It's kind of late so I might not work on it much more tonight but will keep at it in the morning.
Obviously I've been under a rock cuz this is the first I've heard of this. Glad it seems to have a happy ending already
