Well I'm STILL trying to find a 350 to replace my dead 305. Gonna check one out tomorrow, don't know to much about it yet. All I know is this: 355 10:5 to 1. L82 Corvette 202 heads / 274 energizer Hydraulic cam low kms. He's asking $3000 for it. The guy selling it runs a speed shop, so hopefully I can get him to install it too. Still more than I want to pay, but it's getting close to winter and I need my wheels.
Those are not Vortec heads so your manifolds should fit just fine. I'm not sure what the specs for that cam are but those heads probably aren't anything special. (Don't be seduced by the 'C' word! Get the castings numbers and look them up.) Overall, that sounds like a lot of cash for a used motor.
$3000 seems alot for a used motor... even with low kms.
... it seems to be a good combo, and even if it was recently built, he should not be asking much more than $1000 or $1500.
$4000 is what they charge for a FRESH rebuild (atleast that's the performance shop price around Ottawa). So, $3000 on a used motor seems like alot.
Maybe they will do $3k installed ??? Your exhaust and pretty much everything will bolt up. Does it include an intake and carb ??
As a benchmark I paid $2500 for a motor complete carb to pan so I don't think you are too far off. Engine rebuilders typically sell them for that price with a warrenty.
Yes the engine is complete air filter to pan. And it may be a bit pricey. But up here people are asking $500-800 just for an engine that needs to be rebuilt. And we don't have a reliable machine shop here in town, so getting one rebuilt is out of the question. I have found a few 'better deals' on that kijiji site, but none that are local. And I can't really haul an engine in the back of a Cavalier lol. I'm gonna try to work on the price, plus it also depends on what he is gonna charge to install it. Around here it's $700-1000 to get an engine swapped. And hopefully he will cut me a break on the install, have to wait until this afternoon (meeting him today) to find out. And who knows, maybe he still has that ZZ4 kicking around (same guy). Maybe an extra $1000 for the ZZ4 is worth it. At least that would have aluminum heads and be a roller engine.
So I just got back from talking to the guy. Seems really cool, and I'm gonna go for it. It's gonna be about $5000, but here's what I get. He is gonna tow my car for me to his shop and pull my 305. Then he's gonna take the 355 and put a performer intake and a quadrajet onto it. As well he's gonna install a gear drive, MSD distributor and 6AL box, new plug wires, new belts, hoses, and a new flexplate. As well he's gonna put on a new set of headers and completely tune it for me. And while my car's there I get a set of keys to his shop. So if I want to do any work on it while he's not there I can.
He seems like he really knows his sh*t. He took me around to show me some of his customers cars. And the work this guy does is amazing. One of the cars he showed me was really nice rag top Judge that he just finished putting a 572 with a serpentine set up in. And again, his work is beautiful. no hacking or butcher jobs. He also built some record holding 10,000 pound rig that runs 12s in the 1/4 mile (the thing runs 2 650 nitrous shots lol) . He has a lot of customers that come all the way up here from the US. And it seems most of the local drag racers know him and go to him.
So now I just have to wait. He's gotta finish some diesel truck he's working on (and wow, this guy is the man when it comes to diesels), then he's gotta fix a head gasket on a blown sbc Fierro, and install an engine in one of his employee's drag trucks, then it's my turn. It will be so nice to drive the Malibu again. I will post some videos as soon as I get it back.
