so i have an 84 cutlass and it was driving great, what sucks is that if i press the gas pedal to quick it will die, maybe is off timing....as i was going to cruise it and it died when i tried to turn it back on the key wouldnt go over nor back to the off position it stayed stuck on acc. the car is in park but i started missing with it and movved the shifer to gear and now i cant get it back to park either....weird so if i get it back and park in the ignition is still stuck what can it be? any suggestions?

pop the hood........look down at the steering column to see where the linkage ( or lingage rod) attaches to the column, pull it upwards. sounds like your linkage is too short or the cable stretched. there is a way to lengthen/shorten or change the angle of the linkage rod. one bolt right roughly in the middle of the linkage rod. even an 1/8 inch to long/short will give ya grief. went through 3 keys and two ignition racks before i figured that one out.

basically the same applies for console or column shift

peace

No need to pop the hood. Just grab the steering column inside the vehicle and rotate it counter clockwise. You'll be able to get the keys out then.

However it sounds like the linakge that runs from the transmission's parking lever up to the steering column is either worn or not hooked up.
