I'm interested in buying some Mickey thompson tires and heard they weren't good at all. I love the way they look and want so bad. Can someone let me know if they're worth buying
You looking at the street radial or the E.T.STreet ones??? Mickey Thompson Tires have been around for many years, if they weeren't any good, they wouldn't be in business anymore. GO get 'em 8)
Just my opinion fwiw. M&Ts assuming you are referring to drag radials are good depending upon use. If you want primarily a track only tire they have proven themselves. If you drive it on the street and there fore may hit some rain and or are concerned with wear vs other drag radials not so much. I think both MandH (a small US company) and Nitto have a better drag radial for our cars if you are driving it on the street for those reasons. I've owned both. I would take all three over BFGs DR.
Somes sizes for Gbodys. Not sure if anyone makes 14" DR to fit our cars. I know BFG makes a 245/60/14 regular radial. It barely fits our skinny factory ralleys but has a 25.6" height to keep speedo & odometer correct and is the only thing to fit our Gs that looks musclecar in a 14.
I use a 275/50/15 on my GN because I want that height for gearing and because I have an 8" rim. If I was using a 7" rim I would use the common 235/60/15 both of which are about 26.0 tall keeping speedo & odo real close. All of them have the common 275/60/15 a 28.0 tire which I used on a widened 15x8 442 ralley. Something noteable is that for straight line traction going taller provides more traction than going wider.
Several make a 16 the most common on gbodys being the 255/50/16 26.1 tall. Several make a 17 the most common being the 275/40/17 26.0 tall. My new favorite the 275/45/18 MandH has the same height & section width as a 275/60/15 so it will with correct backspacing fit the Gbodys without frame notching tubing or serious body mods. If I were buying new rims for a sort of pro tour best combination of straight line & cornering I would get this tire.
When you get into larger 19+" diameter rims on gbodys your sidewall gets so small & provides so little flex that it is hard to hook up any real power (500+ HP or TQ) for straight line acceleration. Unless you are getting into frame notches & tubs. Big rims are for better cornering until you get so big that they raise the center of gravity & get beyond basic simple affordable suspensions mods required to compensate. At that point they are just for fashion. Err sorry for the rant.
I run the RWL Mickey Thompson St's on my car since spring last year ( replacing the 10+ year old BFGs ). Nice tire, lots of meat. No downsides for me other than they are an all-season mud and snow rated tire just like the BFG's they replaced.
