I just got back. After we went through Yellowstone we fueled up in Cody, Wy and headed NW to highway 296 then went NE at the junction with 120 (Beartooth). Some absolutely stunning scenery on those roads. I'd reccomend Red Lodge as an overnight spot. Touristy main street and plenty of lodging. Between Red Lodge and Glacier is mostly open rolling hills and hay country. Not too exciting but you can drive fast.
There's quite a bit of road construction on the east side of Glacier. I'd recommend going in at St Mary and doing Going to the Sun road. Maybe take a bus tour if you have time. They're open top restored '30s buses and run all over.
You mentioned Flathead lake, which is really nice but geared for tourists, especially the southern end. Lodging is expensive.
