So as a few of you know, I bought the Sumit brand 2.5" exhaust kit for my cutlass. Kinda thinking ahead of the game here, I'm wondering how i can modify the tailpipes it came with to exit behind the rear tires. The pipes are the monte style that exit under the bumper.

I was cruising through google looking for a possible way to do this, and found this.

In the last part of the description, it says "Universal kits are single tailpipes that may be used as the left or right side."
What does that mean?

Refer to the pic on that link for this explanation  My thought was to have the tails cut near the piece of tape on the pipe (after it goes over the axle) and maybe just rotate the end piece of the pipe to exit behind the tire. If that doesn't work, my kit came with 2 12" extension pipes, so I might be able to get those welded on as the "tip" after the pipe is cut.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I think it's just a gerneric blurb they probably put in all their tail pipe adds.

As far as what you want to do it is very possible and exactly what I ended up doing on the exhaust for my El Camino. You need to cut a little closer to the first bend, and need a 45 Degree bend to make the exit. You can have the bend made from the left over pipe.

Page 5 of my build thread shows how it ended up working out for mine.

I'm using a Pypes X pipe and Flow master tail pipes with Summit house brand mufflers (2 1/2").
