sorry for postin so much but im at a loss here. i got the car runnin and timed. it idles so smooth its unbelievble for me cause ive never had somthin purr like this does. but as soon as i give it a rip on the gas or try to mov it it stumbles or back fires a little through the exhaust, somtimes through the carb. which i know on a holley is no good. i fully believed its timed corect, so could it be the carb, be to lean/fat? am i gonna have to rejet this thing or anything? im kinda kickin myself i should bought another edelbrock it woulda been much easier.

Im am having the same problem. I have been adjusting the mixture screws on the sides and it is getting better. My holley was back firing through the carb under load. It idles great, but when you step on it ,it backfired through the carb. I have been messing with the mixture and its gettin better. Now i just have a hestitation. It will take a bit of tuning and trial and error, but u should be able to dial it in without rejetting it.

what kind of distributor? what kind of advance? where's your timing set at?

Holley's suck,,,,,too sensitive,,,too much adjusting,,,too lean,,,too rich..etc.etc........... I've said it before and i'll say it again Edelbrock's are way better for reliability and everyday performance!! out of the box they need nothing but to be mounted. I've had my Edelbrock for 15 years of awesome uninterupted performance!! before that....i went through 3 Holley's!!!

this is a general statement, it is not directed at anyone specific.

just because you have had a problem in the past with a type of carb does not mean that every driveability problem must be because of that carb. there are A LOT of different things that must be correct for the car to perform properly. it's like tuning a carb, if the timing or idle speed, or mixture is off then everything else is off.

the problem he's describing could be from a bad carb, it could also be a distributor with no advance. it could be bad spark plugs, it could be a few other things.

The big secret to adjusting holly carbs is doing it as Holly recommends.
Pick up the book, follow it and it will run perfect, unless of course the carb is damaged.

well how come all of my tuning problems ended when i changed from a Holley to an Edelbrock>>>????

got home tonight and decided to put my old edelbrock spread bore on it to see what would happen. same sorta thing is happening but not as drastic with the fire balls and what not, more a hesitation than anything. i am about to go through the process of checking the ignition system. it is timed in at 10 degrees the advance is working, plugs are fairly new, wires are fairly new but i think nee to replaced due to damge on a few from poor routing (could be cause). distributor was in good working order as far as i know im gonna pull a plug, and im gonna change the coil real quick see what happens

i tried holley and it worked for a while after a full rebuild and then started getting worse and worse and worse. i sat out there for a whole afternoon one day messing with it, reading the instructions online and then gave up. i threw the edelbrock on and walla, 2 minutes of tuning and it was faster and more responsive then ever! i have a holley on my boat and it had issues also, and that was with a certified mechanic working on it!

there you go.....another satisfied Edelbrock carb user regalman4925
