There has been some debating between friends and my self on new motor break in from time to time this comes up. I want to hear some opinions. I personnaly have my motors dynoed before install not every one has that luxury. we all know the proper way to break in the cam shaft 2-2500 for 15- 20 mins. but what i want to hear is do you drive it easy for a few hundred miles or are you like me to floor if it breaks the machine shop didn't do there job right..lol

I put a limit on how hard i push it. The first 200 miles i have my limiter set on my ignition to 5000 RPM. Just usual stop and go for the first 200 miles too. then after that i rip the hell out of it. ive done this to 4 difrent engines so far, and nothing has gone wrong... but of course everyone has there own methods.

I do careful, controlled break in procedures on everything I do. From engines to clutches to brakes, it all gets treated gently until things have seated and mated. I even did this when I got my truck brand new in 1998. It now has 281k miles on it and the original clutch lasted 200k miles with the trans going out at 245k (a bad bearing). The original engine is still there with excellent oil pressure and compression, so I guess I did something right. Also, it has ALWAYS been used to deliver pizza, so none of those miles have been easy.

As for how I break in an engine, I do the normal cam break in for 20-30 minutes then change the oil. Then I drive it carefully for 500-1,000 miles and change the oil again. I do another change after 3,000 more miles and that is when it is ready to be beat on. For me, this takes about a month to two months to reach 4,000 miles.

i say take it easy because i broke in my cam with no problems and then started to have some fun. unfortunately it looks like my rings haven't seated yet and blow-by SUCKS!! once the weather warms up i'm going to cruise the highway and hopefully get them set.
