well finally got the 442 on the road today, got roughly 20 miles, an i could hear the god awful rod knock, limped it home, now the decision...................
1, has anyone ever changed rod bearings with the motor still in the car?lol i know dont say it.
2. remove the 350 from other cutty and drop it in the 442 and save the 307 for future build
3. build the 455 and drop that in.
my dilema, the 350 is already built with 0 miles just idle time, producing roughly 600 ponies-----money already soent, 455 needs complete build, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr im thinking the 350 may be dropped in, i know im gonna bastardize the car, but it is just temporary.
any thoughts, as i would rather just due bearings if i dont have to yank the 307, for if i yank it, it isnt going back in.

I was in your same position back in the summer of '02.

I GRENADED the 307 in my 442, and had always intended on putting a 455 in it.
I was 18 and had no money to buy or build one, but I did have a running SBC 350 that I had gotten for free.
I decided that instead of letting the car just sit, I put the 350 in so I could still enjoy the car (I left the hood closed :lol🙂.
The 350 was in the car for 2 years, and during that time I secured a 455 and started building it up.
Then in the spring of '05, the motor was ready and I pulled the car apart for the 455 to go in...

Have fun!

Since that 350 of yours is already running in your other car, just drive that while you get things lined up for the 442.
That way you won't have to change the stuff for a SBC, only to change it back a short time later...

I don't think it's possible to do rod bearings without removing the engine from a gBody :|

If the 350 is an Olds, I would drop that down in there

It's possible to change rod bearings with the motor in the car, though it's no easy task...

Problem is, if it let go in a similar fashion to my 307, than the affected rod would need to be replaced, which would necessitate the top of the motor coming apart.

Not worth it for a 307 in my opinion, even if the hard-core VIN 9 crowd likes to keep these cars numbers-matching.

Just pull the 307 out and stuff it in the corner. If you ever sell the car, then it's somebody else's headache...

the other cutty cant be driven, kinda got in trouble a few years back, too many beers, you know the rest, the car was impounded and went through a dirty inspection, an since i was racing the car, thewre was alot of stuff that was not legal for highway use, or as they said, not safe for the public, lol
and i have the front frame a lil bent, body mounts ripped out, that car will be back on the road, but right now the added expense of fixing it for the summer just isnt in the budget, well here comes the olds bastardization i spose, kinda pissed me off though. and i dont think the rod is bad, it just has a faint knock, i limped it home at idle so as to not cause more damage, wasnt knocking , just when she hit 2000 rpms, idles fine, slight knock when revved
was hopin was the transmission, but got under an the noise is rod bearing for sure, well i shall post photos of the install, by the way the 350 chevvie looks pretty clean, lol

1 question, if i leave the computer alone, just nothing on the engine will be hooked up, all will be nicely tucked away under heater box, hopefully, will it still work my lockup??? or do i need the damn kit for it????

if you want to find out which cylinder has the bad bearing you can kill the plug wire one at a time and when the knock goes away it's the cylinder that's not firing with the shot bearing....this way you can just change out the bad bearing(s) if you want

It can be done in the car, but is not easy. Lifting the motor so the oil pan will come off is one problem. If it's just a spun bearing, easy to slip in a new pair. Worst case would be finding deep scratches in the crank, and knowing it should come apart.

been humming on it all afternoon, i will be starting the removal of my 350 should be on the floor in 1 horu after i start, then roll the 442 in for new heart, lol
just wondering on that transmission, will the ecm still work the lock up, or do i need the lock up kit,
