307 Regal, IIRC, I thought you said something about formerly having a flowmaster 80 series on your regal. How did it sound in your opinion?

I thought it sounded great. Especially when I took the cat off. I kinda miss it actually... I took it off because the rest of my stock system was totally rotted out. I wasn't employed at the time so to save money I made a glasspack sidepipe.

I would avoid the long-a glass-pack, may sound like a fart-can.

Um, I have to disagree...... stock exhaust mufflers systems do not drone because they're designed to be pretty quiet.....and as for the fart can sound....it doesnt always mean its coming from the muffler...often, the tone comes from the engine and the muffler location in the system. The closer the muffler is to the engine in the system, the better the sound/tone.... And, Ive never heard an olds v-8 w/glass packs sound anything like a tuner car w/a fart can..... :puke:

A stock, 307 7A headed engine is not going to sound aggressive. Yes, it can sound loud and annoying but aggressive, no.

Just remember, making lots of noise doesn't mean your going any faster. 😉

I'd go with a nice Walker replacement muffler for a 442 which has a deep, mellow tone or even a Dynomax Ultra-flo muffler. Both would sound decent.

I like glass packs myself. 10 series & 50 series flowmasters sound good too, just pricey. I have 9 inch Jones glass packs on my car, got them from summit.

My 2 cents;

Assuming you already have a muffler that's OK, it's waste of time and money buying a fancy muffler just for the sound. If you have a stock 307 and are running a crap factory style single exhaust, comparing the sound others are getting from 'muffler x' on their hotrods will have no bearing on what it will sound like in your car. None. If you want an 'aggressive' sound, want a little more juice especially if you decide to do some modding, and just generally want something that's worth bothering with, you need to ditch the crossover/single exhaust setup and go with something better otherwise it's a complete waste of time and money IMO.

How did it sound with the cat? That is the setup I'm gonna be putting on my car, because I legally cannot remove the catylitic converter, unless I register my car as a classic car in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which will exempt my car from emissions testing, but is a rather PIA , and has a ton of limitations as to what you can and cannot do with the car.

Actually, if you hit a certain RPM every exhaust, EVERY exhaust is going to drone, stock, aftermarket & semi-custom (mix of stock pieces & aftermarket muffler). While a stock exhaust is meant to be quiet (and restrictive) most cruising rpm you are getting a drone because of the harmonics. The aftermarket / performance exhaust is less-restrictive, hence you get a drone at the rpm. Also the drone may occur through an rpm range where you accelerate it, but if you're in a higher gear and settle back down to the cruising rpm you get a drone. Ever notice on these or older cars with a stock exhaust over the years the exhaust gets a little louder - that was due to the fiberglas mat deteriorating in the muffler, hence losing the "quietness" and the drone, which was always there, becomes more prominent. Newer OEM mufflers / exhausts are better made, as they have to last 100 / 150K due to emission regulations. Also add in interior sound-deadening material improvements and it's even more quiet, leading some OEMs to add "sound pipes" into the interior behind the dash to pipe in exhaust noise in sporty models; most prevalent is Ford.

Know all too well about placement of the muffler and how it sounds; best example of this is on the GM X-Frame B-Bodies from 58 - 64 and I think the Riveria may have kept that frame through '66. But in terms of droning ,it really doesn't matter how close / far away the muffler is, it's still going to drone no matter what. It also depends on the routing, pipe size, type / number of bends, number of restrictions, length...too many variables to discuss here.

It's the same thing on aftermarket air cleaner assemblies, like on K&N FIPKs. All that baffling and convolutes in the system are there to "quiet" the air intake noise; the noise is always there, it's just quieted down. Remove the box, put on a cone filter, straight tube and you get "intake noise". Not sure now but they used to put warnings in the instructions stating as such, just as other makers of those things. It's another reason why most are now blocked off somewhat from the engine bay; it not only helps keep bay heat, dirt from the filter but also helps with noise.

In terms of the fart-can comment - I have. Had to deal with it over a year from a neighbor in the old neighborhood. Had a single no-name glass-pack on his 307 Regal with a hacked-up exhaust and that thing sounded just like another neighbors' Prelude with a coffee can fart & 5" tip. I've heard them on other Olds ,Bufords, Chevies, Fords... :mrgreen:
