I already have a build thread going over at Malibu Racing, but I figured I'd put it up here as well.

Original thread (started last spring):

Resurrected for this year:

Background if you don't want to read the MR thread:
Last year:
I started with a stock 305 (Holley intake, Edelbrock 1405 (600cfm man. choke) carb, headers, 3-speed stick). Had an '88 350 that I thought may have been sucking oil past the valve seals, but rings were bad. I put in the 350 after putting on a set of Vortecs (disassembled and cleaned up with new seals) and GMPP Vortec intake, the same Edelbrock carb, and a Comp Cams XE268H (224º/230º @ .050", .477"/.480" lift).

I also added Hotchkis springs, thicker F-Body front sway bar, stock G-Body rear, and the 2 triangulating F41 frame bars (couldn't find the cross bar, may make my own). Also scored a 115mph cluster from a Monte SS.

This year:
So far I've found a 4-speed Saginaw to put in place of the 3-speed I was running (3 gears are no fun), and pulled the motor/trans in order to do rings & have it balanced.

Got myself into a bit of a mess here, because even though I replaced the main bearings last year, they were trashed when I pulled everything apart. So I went down to the bare block, honed it, had it cleaned & new bearings put in. I also have to have the crank turned, and I'm currently waiting on the rod bearing size I need from the machine shop. Also picked up a new balancer just to be safe (old one had over 200k on it, though it looked to be alright).

On to the pics 🙂

One reason I yanked it back out:

Was losing oil somewhere at the back :x

Plans involve pulling the non-functioning climate & cruise control (probably won't be driving the '81 much longer, trying to get things in motion on the '78 with no extra money :? )

Ever wondered what Purple Power (Walmart, Autozone, etc.... $5 a gallon) can do?

I'd love to keep it & make it a weekend bruiser by sticking something like a stock big block in with a quiet exhaust, but I just don't have the room to have 2 'Bus, so eventually it's going bye-bye and I'll just have the '78.

Looks pretty good!

I agree that the '78 is the better candidate for your time, plus it's that awesome green! Maybe have the '78 as your nice car, and keep the '81 around for a bomber?...or just part it out...

The '78 is going to get repainted, I'm not sure what kind of bodywork has been done underneath, but I can tell from inside the trunk the quarters have been patched, and the headliner is out, looks like the roof has been patched. Paint code is "Medium Green Poly", I'll probably go to the original paint color, but go black on the interior.

The '81 I'll likely part out. There isn't much on the body itself worth keeping, but somebody may be able to use some interior pieces.

that thing looks so beasty with all the rust and deterioration goin on lol, one of my favorite looks, looking good doesn't make you go fast i like it
