laughed at me that I had a "gutlass."

I've been there before too. A long time ago I had an '81 Malibu with a 327 in it. I was having a conversation with an older guy and he said, "you have a 327 in that thing!" Nonetheless, it wasn't a deterrent. I bought my first G-body at 17 and I've recently turned 37. I will admit one thing though, I miss the days of picking these cars up for next to nothing. I can tell the popularity & scarcity is beginning to increase because of the prices I see them going for now.

Pick them up while you can huh? Ill be attending shows this year and will gauge more interest in the platform as I attend the shows. I give the car a few more years when the 88 becomes 20 years old then things will get interesting.

Pretty much. I used to pick up nice '78-'81 Malibu's all day for under a grand. Not trying to upset the Malibu owners, but they were the most basic and had the most bland interiors of the G-body platform (IMO anyway). It's already hard to find one without bad frame rails or being a rattle trap.

My 81's frame rails are fine.. The drip rails, not so much... or the dash.... or the lower corners of the rear glass..

In the 70's the smog era developed and much more restricted vehicles were brought to market, in a sense the "fun" of building a muscle car began to fade, quickly. So here comes the gbody platform. These cars were the last of the true normal everyday RWD passenger vehicles of our times to be mass produced. I am not referring to any Camaro, or Firebird, Mustang, etc.

What we have to realize these cars were truly the last regular RWD vehicle that you can stuff all kinds of engine in, change the transmission, rear end, race it, drive the hell out of it and it still has two doors and they look good when done "right." Everyday I take my car out I have a conversation about it. They comment about how they once had one of those cars, how comfortable they are etc, etc.

This was well-said, I agree completely. G-bodies are unique in this way. Now about attracting attention, does anyone really drive a G-body to attract attention? (Big wheels and lowriders excluded, attention seems to be the exclusive goal in those cases...being a G-body would just be an afterthought) Most of the attention I get is of a variety I'd rather not have, and there really is no attention that I desire. I like my car, I'm building it the way I want, and I really don't care if other people like it or not. If someone does, that's cool, and if I run into a fellow G-body enthusiast, that's way cool. But as for the average person on the street, I don't care, and I think they'd be more interested in the latest zero-emission vehicle. Good for them. As for a ridiculous pop-culture show by and for idiots? I wouldn't think twice about it. But hey, this is just me. I still have whitewalls.
