i am trying to get the body back on the frame but i want to fix my rockers before i do it so that i can have better access to the back of the rocker. i had intended to cut a set out of a car at the salvage yard, and i found a super clean set on a monte ls but when i asked about cost they told me that they no longer allow sawzalls in there. so now what? can i maybe drill all of the spot welds? or should i just order new ones? the new ones do not have the rear portion of them included(i think) which is why i wanted to use some nice used ones. the monte that is in the salvage yard should not even be in there it is so clean and it almost makes me sick to think about cutting the panels off of the body but it is headed to the crusher no metter what i think about it. too bad the salvage yard wont sell us the bodys, but they will sell a truck cab or bed?? what hav ethe rest of you guys done to replace rockers? the rest of the car is in great shape for the most part, everything is solid, has some of the usual minor issues but no bad rust anywhere....

I'm undergoing hte same process and it's more difficult then it looks. The quarters are actually spot welded on to the rockers (on the flange and on the face of the qp. if you can get that clean Monte cheap enough. buy it, take it off at home and salvage whatever else you may need and sell the rest back to the yard

if i could get the whole body i would keep the body, it is clean as can be! but that would not solve my issue, it would just give me a third g body! has anyone used the aftermarket ones?

no one?? i found rockers at several places online, cheapest so far is 50 bucks plus 22 shipping which personally i think is high but i am also stingy with my money lol. the guy at the local salvage yard told me that i could not use a sawzall to cut out rockers because of the insurance liability or some such. these rockers are the only thing hanging me up at this point as far as getting the underside coated and body back onto a painted frame.

Are any power tools allowed? Maybe a cutting torch??

Not to sound like an a$$ but you are doing a frame off restoration and you are putting a digital dash but yet don't want to spring the $50 dollars for new rockers? For the time you waited for the junk yard you could of got new ones and had them installed already.

I installed a used set from a parts car on my GP/GTO. With hind site a new set probably would have been easier, but it depends on the condition of your car. A new set includes only the outer and inner panels as separate pieces.

The advantage of junk yard pieces is you get the surrounding parts. Rust does not know where a replacement panel is. If the floor is bad at the edge, you can take that piece too. I cut mine off with a sawzall though. I do not know any other way to do it. Drilling out the welds does not sound realistic. Offer the guy a few bucks to look the other way when you walk into the yard. Make sure to cut back into the floor. I cut off the bottom of the quarter and door jamb and 12" into the floor when I cut mine off.

i just odered new ones, i was not sure that i wanted to have reproduction ones, repo parts are not always the better soultion. also the repos do not include the rear part of the rocker so i am going to have to cut and bend metal to replace that also. if i pulled them from teh salvage yard they already have the backing plate on them and i am sure that they are a good fit and not made of some cheap crappy thin metal. and i am not sure where you can find a pair of rockers for 50 bucks?? these were the cheapest i found, i ordered both sides

It's best to drill out the spotwelds and then spot weld in the new stuff. I'm not sure from your description, but does the part that the replacements not have (length) rusty on the car? If not you can just section that part, just make sure its sleaved if you do a butt weld.

i did in fact drill out all of teh spot welds to remove the old ones. i was spotting the backing plate back of and my mig ran out of gas so until i get that filled again i am on hold. i am not using the whole panel but i am using most of it and it looks to fit great 😀
