okay guys im new here and new to the project car world so ill jump straight into it: i recently bought a 1984 oldsmobile cutlass with an oldsmobile 350 in it. the body is in pretty good shape. the engine has a knock in it so im pulling it and dropping in a chevy 350 this week. my two problems are: the guy i bought it from failed to mention that it has NO EXAUST PIPES. non what so ever. now im 21 and this is my first car so i take full responsibility for not noticing but thats water under the bridge now. i need to know where i can find some and for how much. im on a budget for now so i dnt need anything too high end. i just need to get it running. other than that the only problem i have with the car that the guy took the bottom part of the back seat off and now its sitting there. how do i get it back connected to the car body. thanks in advance for any help given.
p.s. sorry for the lack of introduction. its just this is a pressing need and im on a schedule and need it fixed asap. all input appreciated

Check Summitracing.com for the pipes and muffler kits for a g-bodys. Do you need header/manifolds too? If so, a good place for that would also be Summit or Jegs, or Ebay or Craigslist, just make sure it's for a g-body(monte carlo for example). SBC 350 parts are everywhere.

Heres cheap headers if you need them, which I am guessing you will.

Here is the rest. I am assuming you do not have emissions testing or inspections.

Keep in mind to run true duals you need to notch the Transmission cross member or buy an after market one.
If that is more than you want to spend you may get luck and find a shop that will hook up a single exhaust for a little cheaper.

okay THANK YOU and the replies are appreciated. im guessing summit racing will be number one on my "go to first" list when im in need. and thanks for the links. the entire system is what i need and for 180 something thats not bad. and yes ill definatly need headers because the ones that i have now, the nuts are so rusted we have to cut them off. i do have a few more questions. the engine is an olds 350 but it has a knock in it. i was wondering could i take it to a junkyard and try and trade it out for anything i need? and if so, what should i be expecting? the body is fine so can i take the exhaust system off of another g-body car from the yard and slap it to mine? and last thing:ive been trying to find a complete diagram of the 84 cutlass so i can see everything im supposed to have and everything thats IS there and over all just know my car. my dad had a 78 cutlass and the haynes book to match but i cant find it anywhere. but anyways, thanks again for all input on the subject. i really appreciate it. and once i get some decent pictures ill post em so you can see what i have. and you can also see im very new to this. we all have to start somewhere and this is mine and i need all the help i can get lol

You could probably sell the 350 locally to offset the cost on the parts you need. You will need to find a little information out. Like what exactly is it? Behind the water pump and in front of the intake there is a little "shelf" with a casting number. This casting number will let you know what year it is. This may make it more or less valuable. You might be able to sell it as a core for a 100 or 400 it all depends on who wants it and what it is. Earlier blocks would be more desirable. As far as taking a complete exhaust of a g body at a junk yard, well you could but I bet it is gonna be in rough shape. And since your putting a chevy in your car you would want to find a monte carlo with a 305 and use its manifolds and full exhaust on your 350 chevy to make it cheap. I would not mess with that, I would just buy the above parts and notch the trans crossmember. You know your gonna want to mod it down the road anyway and exhaust is one of the first things people do. Goodluck

I'm not trying to be the "purist" here but for the sake of cost and ease, why not just replace it with another Olds 350 or 403? It's about the easiest bolt in deal possible. On another note, do you have a universal case trans or an SBC trans to go with the SBC 350?

Re: need help immediatly with first car- 1984 needs exaust p

just found out i have ANOTHER problem: so i just checked the numbers on the engine and they are 3161-5A. thats the 307 v-8 if im correct. now the guy- the same guy who failed to mention that the entire exhaust system(exept the rusted headers) were removed- told me it was an oldsmobile 350 with the th350 trans in it. ive been lookin up the details on a 307 to chevy 350 swap and it seems much more difficult than what i originally thought. so it seems i have to find even more money into this. now im wondering if thats even the trans thats actually in it. now i will say ONCE AGAIN that I TAKE ALL RESPONSIBILITY for not checking, but come on man. i know what to look for when i check out a car but to go in saying "gee, i hope this car has the exhaust system hooked up". but anyways. now i have to check and see if thats the transmission i have and how im supposed to drop this engine in here. oh and the reason im going with a chevy engine is because my father gave it to me. if i could find an oldsmobile engine for free then of course id snatch it up immediately but as for now i have to go with what i have. but if all ends up working out and the car becomes what i hope then later once i have more money i will go all oldsmobile everything and keep it all original and pure. but for now i have to deal with what it is so im asking advice on the situation and what i should do now with the info i have

If you were lied to about the engine you were probably lied to about the trans as well. Crawl under it and see what you have. Here is a page that tells you how to identify them.

Re: need help immediatly with first car- 1984 needs exaust p

ive been there, check the engine casting # and dont believe everything ya hear. and for headers you can get them on craigslist for cheap.

Re: need help immediatly with first car- 1984 needs exaust p

Don't sweat it man. It's happened to all of us at some point and you just learn from it.

But anyway, you should feel better knowing that it was a 307 knocking. Not as much of a loss now!
