I say pull a olds 350 from a junkyard and put it into your car. All you accessories will swap over, its a really easy swap.

new life maybe. okay, acording to the link chris.o gave me and some time under the car i found out it actually is a 350 trans. and the guy i bought it from obviously isnt that much of a car guru. spent a couple of hours out with my father and this is what we found. ill give you all the info and see what you make of it: the guy said the engine was blown and possibly siezed but my father was able to turn the crank by hand. it did have a little stiff spot in there but some quick muscle got straight through it. he says that a piston rod might be cracked. he also checked the spark plugs and they look rather new. you can tell theyve been used but are in fairly good condition. the oil is full and as clear as day. not a drop of water, grim or coolint in it. so he says if its just a thrown rod then i can drop the oil pan, throw a new one-or a whole new set- in and be good to go. if its more then i can go ahead and drop the chevy 350 in after finding a steering fluid tank and holder and the arm to hold the altenater. im hoping its just a thrown rod though. that way i can slap new ones in and save alot of money. now im lookin for a new set of pistons now just in case but i am preparing for the worse. id like to know what you guys think i can now do with this new info

Fixing a bottom end knock isn't just a matter of "slapping" new parts in there. Right now you have no idea of the condition of the cylinders, crank, pistons, pins, rings or bearings. You'll end up having to tear into this engine and spend money on it. There's no easy/cheap way around it.

As for the clean oil and recent plugs, I'm guessing that the previous owner made a last ditch attempt to get it running right by throwing parts at it.

If I was in your shoes I'd be looking for another Olds engine to replace it. I'm not sure where you're located but it shouldn't be too hard to find a 350 fairly cheap. Maybe someone would trade you the Chevy 350 for one if you're trying to keep costs down.
There's always craigslist, junkyards, cars sitting in the country, etc, etc. Gotta get creative sometimes!

and you can't fix the bottom end without taking the top end off or there is a new way of installing a piston that I havn't heard about yet....once a motor is sitting on a stand it makes no sense to drop it in the car without removing the pan and the heads to see what you have unless you know where the motor comes from and it runs good with no leaks...

You would be looking at a minimum of a crank being turned, rod replacement most likely, new rod and main bearings. Your over 200 bucks there. Then when you get in it you will probably see that it needs more like GBVET said. By the way, your chevy wont work with the trans you have now, different bellhousing. So you are looking at buying a trans to put a chevy in it. In this situation your best bet is probably picking up an olds motor and throwing it in. Especially if you have headers on the 307, you can swap them over. Thats half your exhaust there. Goodluck.

If you don't mind me asking, how come you want to put a sbc 350 in? Other than the usual cheap parts issue. Reason I ask this is a super straight forward swap, which will save you money unless you have a bag of money and parts available.

1st thing you have a bop th350 that will fit a sbo 350
2nd you have all the accessories that can be swapped over

vs with a sbc you will need to move your motor mounts up do a little wiring. I originally was going to put in a sbc 350. My dad had one he was going to give me complete with a holley carb. I did a little reading and research on the swap. Following that i decide to pull me a sbo 350 from the junk yard. Cost me 326(i didn't return my core for the 30.00 off) Swap was beyond straight forward. I did a small tune up on the motor before dropping it in.

Parts i put in before install

New oil pump
oil pan gasket
valve cover gaskets
Timing chain
timing chaning cover gaskets oil pump gaskets
exhaust manifold gaskets(you can use your stock ones bust the 350 exhaust ports are bigger than the 307)
oil , and oil filter for a oil change
transmission fluid
& athermostat.
