i want to get my rear end done before i paint it and get it on to my frame. i have several stock non posi crap gear rears that are all together and i plan to use one of them for this rebuild. i have a posi unit from a regal and 3.42 gears already mounted to the carrier with a spacer ready to go. what do i need as far as parts to get this done, do i need to replace the bearings? i am not planning to heavily abuse it or anything. can i get by with a crush sleeve and gasket or do i need to replace everything?

if everything is OK, you can probably just re-use most of it (I did). However, if you can swing the cash, you should replace that stuff while you are in there to avoid having to tear it down again (I would have). Summit has good deals on install kits.

does it matter if i use diferent cups on the bearings? i may have gotten them mixed up on the carrier bearings.....

Doesn't hurt if you mix up the bearing cups.

If you used the bearings and shims that came with the pinion gear out of a correctly set-up rearend, the pinion should fall in at the proper depth. You can reuse the crush sleeve as long as you can attain the proper preload on the pinion bearings. Otherwise, get a new crush sleeve

Unless you are incredibly lucky, you will need to juggle the side bearing shims to make the correct backlash. That means you will probably need to surface grind one shim and make or get a new shim for the other side to make up the difference and attain the correct preload on the side bearings

Better get yourself a GM chassis service manual , read the chapter on setting up rearend gears, copy the chart for figuring how much you gotta move the carrier to change backlash, and hook up with a decent machinist or tool & die maker to help you calculate & make the side bearing shims

i have actually researched a bunch and i am pretty confident that i can get it all lined up well. my issue is i am trying to do it cheap and reuse as many parts as possible but at the same time not trying to put together something that will fail. everything i read says replace every single bearing and misc parts that you can, hell i will have over 500 bucks into a budget rear listening to those guys. i have had cars and trucks with 300,000+ miles that never even had the rear ends looked at and where still fine when they were parted out. if i can reuse everything then i think all i need is some axle seals, pinion seal, crush sleeve and the cover gasket, maybe some shims but i have shims out of 3 rear ends sitting here so i should be able to make something work? now i just need to modify the flanges for the rear discs to bolt on.

If you replace the bearings you may run into an issue with the pinion depth. The shim goes underneath the bearing and if you have to adjust the shim then the bearing has to be removed. The bearing usually gets damaged when your removing it. Shops have a ground out pinion bearing that slides on and off so they can change the shims before they put the new bearing in place.

can i reuse the pinion shims and bearing i already have in my rear and on the pinion?

if the bearing is in good shape then you might as well use it. Once a pinion has been set up in a 7.5 then it should work in another 7.5 diff.

i have the pinion installed already and it "appears" to be ok. i am going to try to shim it tonight and see what happens. everything i read said i should replace everything and i do not have the money for all of those parts, it would be several hundred bucks! lol

Just check the pattern of the gear contact, make sure the backlash and the preload on the pinion is within specs you should be alright. It'd be a good idea to change all the seals since you have everything apart if you havn't already considered that.
