i really dont know much about these engines so where is the egr valve, where are the vaccum lines that would cause this (or is there a way to remove em all?) and how would i know if the choke works fine, and how would i check the distributor advance mechanism? where could i find a diagram for the vac lines so i could check em all?

if not fuel then check spark. If it's not either of the 2 a bad cat convertor will do the same.

its a true dual with no cats.... i just read up on the egr and i have a feeling that that is the problem. it ran fine until i replaced the carb fuel filter and the gas line but there are a few vac lines that are not connected but when i put them on it runs even worse, ive noticed tho it hard to start when cold then when it starts it idles high then if i rev it the idle slows way down and if i let it sit and idle it will go even lower and sounds like it just lopeing and about to die. and when i let it idle smoke comes out of the biggest hose going into the air cleaner from the valve cover (i think) and on the inside of the air cleaner it has a filter that is really oilly. so if it isnt the egr valve then im just gonna take it to a shop

no offense but you obviously aren't a mechanic and the car needs one. if one of your friends is a gear head buy him a case of beer to fix it. meanwhile get a haynes manual and read it, this will help you learn your car.

I agree. These cars are relatively simple machines, but without your having a point of reference, we cannot help you. A car this old really requires an owner with some level of technical knowledge or a willingness to learn. It can get very expensive to operate if you have to pay someone else to repair it all the time. Old cars may be simple, but they are rarely dead reliable. They have their quirks that need to be worked out. This is why many of us do not use them as our daily drivers and have them as toys instead. Go to the library and get some basic books on the subject, study it well and then you can figure this stuff out.
