Well, I am missing most of the O rings as it has been apart for many years now, so I will go with the new ones. I will take your advice about flushing the compressor when I go to put it back on ( I removed it a few weeks ago for some odd reason). The car is a mess right now as I am stripping several panels due to excess paint buildup and peeling clear ( never use cheap paint!) and am hoping to paint it before school starts in a few weeks.

Not to resurrect old threads or anything, but the combo of high gas $$ and 100+ heat is keeping the GP in the garage! so... does anyone know if the old radial-style compressors will work in for a r134a conversion or would I need to somehow put a newer axial one on there?

I don't have any of the computer junk on there you guys are talking about, but I really need to get around to converting this thing.... I guess I could just take it somewhere and have them fill it up again w/ R12 but I dunno if its empty because there's a leak or just that its been waaaay too long since its been touched... don't feel like dropping the coin to fill it up just to have it leak out again!

Compressors

Any compressor will work with either R134 or R12. Since R12 is over $100 a lb when you can get it at all, you don't want R12 back in it!

The best compressors were always the GM compressors, as they do an even load on the engine and drive belt as compared with York or Tecumseh compressors with their one cylinder loading in "thumps". The Japanese compressors are just copies of the GM designs, some have smaller displacement for smaller evaporators.

Regards,

Alan

Yeah, the R-4 compressor on my Cutlass worked for 200k miles before I removed it during the swap. The longest I have had a Japanese compressor last is only 125k miles before the clutch went bad on my Frontier.
