well here soon after the new year I will be attempting my very own first paintjob. One day I was looking up paint ideas (actually I think a member on here posted the picture) and saw this awesome flat black with a single gloss stripe. This is my plan

now I will be sandblasting the whole car first.

now I researched how to paint this but still missing some little stuff.

so would it be

1) Prime the car
2) paint the whole car flat black
3) tape off for the stripes, paint them gloss black
4) clear coat the stripes
5) wet sand the stripes

is that how it would work? I don't have to sand the parts of the car with flat black would I? And is it okay to shoot primer / flat / gloss out of the same gun? also if I wet sand what is the recommended grit size?

any more tips / tricks / corrections would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Are you using basecoat/clearcoat or a single stage urthane? If you are using BC/CC just spray the entire car black. Let it flash, lay on the shiny clear. Let it sit for a couple days to make sure the msking tape won't mark it. Mask off your gloss stripes really well. Scuff the rest of the car with 600 grit paper. Mix up some flattened clear coat and lay it on good and smooth. Spray the flattened clear like a normal clear, it will shine like crazy untill it starts to dry.
I have had some excellent results with PPG clear and PPG flattening agent.

If you are using a single stage urethane, paint the whole car with the flat black. Let sit for a couple days. Mask off outline of stripes, make sure you cover the entire car except where stripes are going. Give the black (stripes) a quick scuff with a grey scotch pad and put a couple coats of clear on. Done. Part shiny, part flat.

I personally would go BC/CC. The single stage doesn't have the UV protection that clearcoat does, the single stage will go chalky over time, and you can't wax it.
Good luck.

you might think im crazy but im serious. i have a 53 ford F100 and i wanted it flat black.
i went to ace and i bought rustoleum gas grill paint. painted the whole truck with 2 quarts.
all i had to do was mix in a little thinner and it was perfect and applied great.
i get comments about it all the time and all i heard about that hot rod flat black paint is nightmares
