In all honesty, I've never had experience with 20"s...
but yeah, I would assume something like a 1.5" to 2" spacer.

I once tried to put 17" corvette rims on a camaro, which had +58mm offset, and that needed 2" spacers. OR, notching the frame is the other option.

I ask because the wheels I really want are 20". They make them in 18 but the 20's look better. They are for mustangs. They are the magnum 500 which are basically a buick rally wheel also. I think my regal would look killer with some staggered 20" rally wheels.

Check out that red one. Wow

Hey loneagle,

Not to get off topic here, but what kind of hood do you have? Fiberglass or steel?

I would stick with 15x8 wheels and would not go any larger.

Pat, I no longer run that hood. That was a stock hood with a glass scoop bonded on. After a few years it cracked. So I replaced it with this one http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/C ... 26+Mirrors Got 10% off and free shipping. This is a steel hood and the fit was very nice.

thru alot of research, wasted money, wasted time, and then MORE research,
I've learned that on our G-body cars, anything more than 4" backspacing without mods in the rear spells tire-rub...

Frame notching is an excellent option because it can sometimes be done cheaper (depends who you go to) than paying $300-$400 for a set of spacers and new studs and lugs.

When you're using spacers that large, you never wanna go cheap. Always get billet alloy, with hardenend studs, that are properly quench set into the spacer. It's also a good idea to upgrade your wheel studs from a reputable brand like ARP. And once all is said and done, you'll never really feel comfortable throwing your car into a corner really hard. Not to mention the un-godly amounts of stress that causes on your wheel bearings.

with 20", you're also into a whole new league which I'm not familiar with. You may run into rub issues on the fender skirts, etc... But I'm no expert in that department.

I beg to differ with you khan on the rear tire rub issue. Of course the Regals and Montes have a little better wheel well clearance than the squared off wheel wells that some of the other g-bodies have. I run 17x8 Coy's C5s with 235/45 and 255/45 tires front and rear with 4.5" backspacing front and rear and a 3" drop in the front and about an inch and half drop in the rear. I have no issue on the rears at all, and there are some that run 275 and 285 tires without interference as well. The fronts do rub the very outer edge when I encounter little abrupt bumps in the road, but this can be eliminated with a little negative camber and/or a 40 series tire up front.

mkiiisupra,

yeah, I have to say I've always found that amazing... It seems it is never consistant from G-body to G-body. I've seen some that can run as big as 4.5" BS like your's, and some that struggle with 3.75" BS like mine...

Last time at the track, I noticed someone with a GN using 11" wide slicks on wheels with 4.5" BS, with no mods. And here I was struggling with my 10" wide slicks on wheels with only 3.75" BS on my GP. He had over an 1" of advantage over my car.

I'm assuming the factory line for chassis production was not very accurate at GM back in the 80s...

generally speaking though, most people seem to agree that you need to be causious with anything more than 4" BS. Not saying that it definately won't work, but I am saying that people should be causious.

bad thing to assume?

Is very safe to assume that. Ive seen and heard about the rear end housings being off center any where from 1/4" to 3/8". When you have piss poor quality control and you have a part thats off 30 thousandths here and 40 thousandths there, it begins to add up and you in turn get the problems we are referring to in this topic and others. In other words, every car is different, when if the quality control was up to snuff on the various OEM parts suppliers back in the 80s, these cars would be a lot closer to each other as far as measurements and clearances. Sorry to get off topic.

ha ha,

no, I think it's good that people know about this issue...
