hey guys I need sum help please. I will like to know if I can cut the front of a buick 231 v6 motor oil pan and modify it without causing any problems to the motor. what I got is I am doing a project on one of my sons datsun , I am using an extra buick 231 motor I have. Well the pan on the motor needs to be cut and reweld at the frnt section because its hitting some steerring components . I need to make the depth in frnt about an inch smaller, will this cause any problems ?
Thx Reggie

Shouldn't be a problem unless your mains are in the way.
do you know what the clerence is on the inside of the pan? thanks

If you can do a mock up of the engine in place without the oil pan you be able to see how much clearance you would have and see exactly what would be behind your notch in the pan.

How far back do you need to go? The pan on the 231 is already small up there and I can't remember if the main bolts are below the split line or even and if the crank throws come into play. As suggested the best thing is put it in and mock it up. There are two different oil pans on those engines 85 and newer has a 20 bolt pan (dif front cover also) and earlier ones had 14 bolts. Here is a
pic of the 14
