the neighbor kid bought a 76 chev truck from a friend of the family it has a new 350 engine and a new 350 transmission and it started up and ran beautiful it just wouldn't shift so he took it to all the transmission shops in spokane and they all told him it was a bad transmission and needed rebuilding and the kid couldn't afford that so he brought it home and parked it. i was helping him put a fancier radio in it and asked if he ever got the shifting fixed,he said no he would have to wait for awhile i asked if i could look at it,he said sure i climbed under the truck and noticed the vacume line to the modulator was diconnected, the end had swelled up and gotten soft so i told him to get and adjustable modulator an d a new piece of vacume line. now it shifts good and no hissing sound. remember the kiss principle (keep it simple stupid) my former insructor wasn't that nice in his language.

No vac to the modulator was my thought as I started reading your post - it's a shame the trans shops didn't even entertain this since it's a common problem, they were probably just licking their chops.
