Hey all,
I am 33 year old, with a new project vehicle. I have a very nice condition one owner 1985 SS Monte that is bone stock at this time 177,000 miles. The Trans 200R4 had been rebuild with performance goodies from our GN buddies. The car unfortunately is a peg leg 3:73 gear car. Here in Georgia 1985 and older cars are exempt from emissions so I have swapped the carb and the distributor for new units (well the carb is a 1970 396BB quadrajet unit). The car has been very well maintained but the number 2 exhaust camshaft lobe is gone and the valve stem seals are just not there LOL. SMOKE!!!!!
Anyways the motor has zero blow by and I am pulling it out in a week or two for some mods. (Before anyone yells OMG why a 305, I have a 350 Vortec 4 bolt main motor in my garage that is being built $$$$ 383ci that don’t have right now). Here is my plan, pull the 305 and check for bore, bearing wear. If it's ok, maybe just a re-ring and hone, if its got a ridge then I'm just going to leave it alone. Rebearing rods and crank, new oil pump (standard), new seals, heads 416's are going to be sent out and new bronze guilds installed and 3 angle valve job, new valves with Z28 springs. The heads will be mildly ported and exhaust side polished by me, gasket matched. Summit K1103 camshaft, performer intake, Hooker procomp headers with true dual 2" 1/2 with Thrush welded 2 chamber (flow master 40 clones), with turndowns before rear axle. I will search for a used posi unit when I have some more cash. This is a very tight budget right now, so my mods are limited. I just want a nice driver for now with my working A/C lol, Thanks guys and if you have any input good or bad I would love to here from yall,

Thanks,
Michael

welcome to the forum. be sure to post some pics of your ride...we love pictures

Welcome! You should get some pics up!

mmustic,
I'm oldtinsmith (64 years old), if you really want to be "style'n"then you must buy a booble head or hula hula girl and mount it in the back window! Next, drive with the seat lowered and all the way back so you just barely can see out of the windshield! Then be sure to drive for about 8 miles with a turn signal flashing, very important!...........
Just kidding. Welcome to the site, ask and give/get advice, jaw with us, but have fun! As for your car, make a list of what you realisticly want from your car in the long run, and buy what will work for both engines and you'll be ahead of the game when it comes the time to build the 383.

Thanks Guys,

As far as the motor for the 383 I plan on using the 416 heads with lager valve upgrades and a nice mild port / pocket job with gasket matching and unshrouding. I already know I'll be a little down on power, but I want a nice cruiser that I don't have to rev to the moon to make peak power. I'm thinking 5500 to 6000 rpm tops. The 383 also has the factory roller cam set up, so I will be running a comp or voodoo roller. Also about the rear ends. Can a 7 1/2 live on the street with just street tires and a higher converter to take up some of the shifting harshness?

Yeah she has a nice new black coat of paint, I still need a cowl induction hood for her and new wheels, Im just unsure if I want to do the typical drag look with smaller tires up front or pro touring look with 17"s
