The once I swapped the cap, rotor and coil. The other times they happened out of the blue. Try a module but the pick up coil just dies like what happened to you.

Well, here's the update. Yet again you masters have helped me out. It was the ignition module. O'Reilly said to replace it after they tested it, and $30 later my car starts and goes.

What I didn't know is the ignition module controls or contributes to a heck of a lot of stuff, especially for the 80s.

My fast idle kicks in right away now, insteading of taking half a minute to decide or just not. Instead of pumping the car four or seven times while turning the key, the thing starts by the time my foot is halfway through the first pump. Then there's the gear shifting. I have the overdrive and highway-gear pumpkin. I assumed that was the reason my car would jump into 3rd gear or OD so damn early. Sometimes I'd go around the corner and the sucker would plop up into third gear, at ten MPH. Now it winds up a bit more before shifting and does so much more smoothly. Previously it was like a powerslide. And, there's more power.

Ideally, it won't cut out anytime soon.

Glad you found it. The module has nothing to do with all the rest of that stuff. All it does is produce a nice solid spark signal for the coil to use. A crappy running motor, for whatever reason, will cause all of that.
