Hey im new here and i just wanted to say hey. I am buying my first car soon and i am planning on purchasing a 1984 hurst/olds. Is there anyithing i should look for? Is this a bad car to start with? I am also confused by the "Lighting Rod Shifter" that is has. It looks cool, but how do you operate it? Is it possible to drive in plain Automatic? Thank you very much.

Welcome!

Excellent choice, I'd love to get my hands on an '84 H/O...

They're great cars to start with, just keep an eye out for rust.
The cleaner the car you start with, the better off you'll be.

The lightning rods are a cool feature, and yes, it will funtion like a normal automatic when you're not using the lightning rods.
The lever on the left operates like a stock shifter, controlling P-R-N-OD-D.
The lever in the middle controls the 2-3 shift.
The lever on the right controls the 1-2 shift.

So with all the levers pulled back, you're in 1st gear, and you go.
Then you push the lever on the right from 1 to 2.
Then you push the lever in the middle from 2 to 3.
Then you push the lever on the left from 3 to 4.

Good luck with your search!
