Hi Guys, just purchased a 1986 El Camino, car is in good shape, grandpa owned since new and garaged until 2003, all original with 160k on the clock, 305 V8. I know a good amount about chevys, but was wondering if anyone knew what transmission came in these cars, I looked at the pan but it doesnt look like a 700R4. If it isnt a 700R4 is it just as strong? My car does have overdrive. I would also like to know what are the weak points or things to look for in these cars, my car is overall very solid. The car is also heavily undercoated underneith, like factory undercoating not a recent cover-up job, did all these cars come with that? If so, way to go GM, I wish my 88 trans am had the same protection.

I plan on using the car as is for a while, and later it will probably get some performance upgrades or 350 swap.

The car also came with a cap for the bed that hasnt been off since new, are these caps worth anyting? I dont like how it looks with it on, although it kept the bed like mint.

Any answers or additional info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

thanks for the diagram, yea its the 200R4, Yea will have pics up soon, have to locate the camera first haha

These came with 200r4 stock from the factory. Undercoating I think is just an option your grandfather got from the dealer. They did not come standard with them from what I know of. You have a 7.5 rearend and either 2.41 or 2.73. or 3.08 gears. IF you want to make your El Camino faster the ONLY WAY IS AN ENGINE SWAP. 305 were only made to cruise around town with and get decent gas miles. They were not made to make any serious HP.

Re: New to El Caminos, got some questions, GOT PICS

I have had the car for a week now, put some vette rallys on it, took the cap off, fixed the temp and oil pressure gauges, also fixed the brake line that was blown when I got it, (which was the previous owners reason for selling it, Pepboys quoted $1300 for a brake overhaul, I fixed it for $13.00, $8.00 for line, $5.00 for fluid) washed the car, here she is.......thanks for all the info btw, did trans fluid, yep def the 200r4, car dirves so nice, seems like it will be a nice cruiser, I think I will leave the performance for my 67 camaro.

Thanks guys for the compliments, no the rims are stock 15x8, 245/60 out back, and 215/60s up front, originally for my camaro but since thats a work in progress they are on the El Camino. Yea the car cleaned up nice, going to buff it after I do the plugs, wires, ect...

Someone thought it was an SS, now I do have the Z15 rpo code in the dash, but I looked it up here: http://cs.pontiac-club.com/graphics/...-car-codes.pdf, and it only says collectors edition, not SS. Whats the deal with that? I read that all 86's were collectors editions because it was a anniversary year, is this correct? Doesnt the SS have a center console/shifter a tach, ect..? plastic front (monte ss style)
