Hey fellow GBody enthusiasts. I'm Kelly and I hail from Minneapolis Minnesota. New to the forum here, got myself an 84 Hurst/Olds Cutty that I love to death but has seen much better days. Aside from not being able to find the parts I need I also don't have the know-all to solve my problems myself lol. So I was hoping you guys could help me out with my problems (as concerning my car anyways!!!!) I will start off with a couple easy ones and that is will a chevy motor fit into the cutlass or is there a need for fabrication, and trust me i have searched the internet day and night for an olds 350 thats in somewhat usable condition without costing an arm and a leg in rebuilds alone. Im looking for a motor that can give me inbetween 500-600 hp, that will fit in the car. Now a little more complicated question (for me anyways) I know absolutely nothing about transmissions and rear-ends, so with a new motor and more power im assuming a new transmission and rear-end will be needed as well, but what would be needed for that amount of power? Will the lightning rods hook up to any other transmission? I can't have a 84 Hurst/Olds without the rods. Sorry for the lengthy first post but I'm just very entusiastic about my car and wouldn't feel right if I just shipped off somewhere and let someone else do all the work. Hopefully you guys can help me out, and I have plenty more questions and problems that I will be asking for some help with. Thanks again

I'm not for sure if the shifter will work with other tranys. But as for the sbc it will defiantly fit with a little work but if your going budget build I don't really think 500-600 HP is going to be very cheap either. Imo I would just find an olds 350 I know for a fact you will be able to find one close I live just east of you in WI and I see them all the time in fact there is one on wausau Craigslist all built for cruiser racing for $1500. You'll find out real fast that the guys on here will be very helpful to you but about 60% of the olds guys will tell you you what I'm telling you because they don't like seeing Chevy powered oldsmobiles especially when you have a hurst olds or something a little special like that. As for you transmission and rear end they should hold up just fine. You do what you want but I say olds all the way

Welcome!
Always glad to see local folks. I just moved to Eden Prairie last fall.

Be prepared to catch a lot of flack for putting a SBC in a H/O...
I had one in my 442 for a couple years before I put the 455 in.
I'd recommend a 455 for you as well, since it'll drop right in place of the 307.

The Chevy 350 will bolt in with stock 305 motor and frame mounts.
There isn't any fabrication involved, but you'll need all of the accessories for the front of the motor, because the Olds stuff won't work on a Chevy, which can add up in cost fast.

I don't think the Lightning Rods will work with another trans, but the 200-4R can be built to handle 600hp just fine.
Another nice thing about the 200-4R is that it has both Chevy and B-O-P bolt patterns on the bellhousing.

The 8.5 rear will be fine, but upgrading your axles and driveshaft is a good idea.

kellyanderson,

First, welcome to the site! Your H/O rear end should be an 8 1/2 inch with 3.73 gear ratio (if it hasn,t been replaced). The transmission (with the shifter) should bolt up to a SBC (multi-engine bolt patterns bell housing, (IIRC). I'm sure there are smarter people than me that can steer you in the right direction for your build.
IMO, I think you should build an engine to compliment the stock rear axle and transmission (they are plenty strong). Take the money you would spend on a 9 inch rear end and a stronger transmission (for 500 to 600 horsepower) and put it into a strong STREET engine (I'm assuming this isn't a race car).

Re: New To the forum 84 Hurst/Olds in desperate need of Some

Thanks for all the input. The car is a numbers matching car completely. And with that being said I plan to take the 307 out and slowly completely rebuild it myself (I figured that it would be a good motor to learn on) but in the mean time to quote Ricky Bobby "I wanna go fast!!" lol eventuallyIi would be putting the 307 back into the car. As far as looking for an olds motor I guess i will keep searching because I would like to see a 455 in there. I just havent had any luck finding a motor that I think would be worth putting the time and money into. So does anyone know where I can get some new doors? (thank you MN winters)

Re: New To the forum 84 Hurst/Olds in desperate need of Some

Well havent been on here in awhile, but I got a couple things figured out with my H/O. I have decided to just stick with the 307 and have the car a #s matching ride. Since everything is still original on the car I might as well keep it that way. I have been talking to a couple motor rebuilders and they tell me that the 307 can be built up to almost 300 hp, which I think is a huge step from the 180 hp it currently has. The problem is I dont know anything about different pistons, camshafts or compression ratio. They tell me the compression ratio will be like 9 to 1. and it will have a loopier cam, can someone please help me out and tell me about the compression ratio, and also give me some opinions on pistions and what not, the more knowledge i have (specifically about my motor will be better for me when I bring the motor in) One other thing that I got to thinking about is the frame. Since it has T-tops how much horsepower and torque can the car handle before I have to start worrying about twisting the frame. I dont know all that much about frame types but my buddy recently put a 383 stroker at almost 500 hp in his 78 camaro and was talking about having to get subframe connectors. so again any help you guys can give me please let me know. Im also in search of new doors. I need them asap.
