not sure what to do with the frame... paint or por 15?

i have been planning to paint my frame for the last 2 years, its already been blasted and epoxy primed and ready for paint, but today i got to thinking, is this the best way to go? the frame seems to get plenty of abuse, jacks, jackstands, rock chips, chips from tools removing parts...... just seems like it might be better to por i5 it? maybe the silver por 15? i want it to look custom, this car is going to be far from stock! i am still for sure painting the firewall, rad support....... but not sure on this frame, it just seems like it would be a pain to maintain?
 
It would depend, I'm thinking, if it's going to be driven on a regular basis, or more of a 'show' car.

If it's a driver, I'd lean towards the POR-15, it's pretty tough, compared to paint. I'm going the POR route on my Nova. It's fairly easy to touch-up, can be brushed, etc., unlike paint.

My 2 cents.
 
this is going to be a drivable show car but most shows are several hours away usually. if i paint it i am using some left over single stage from the first time i painted it, i am using the same color but adding charcoal for a 2 tone and doing base clear this time. i just dont want to dump all the time and money into painting it and end up with a crappy looking frame from rock chips and what not. i mean if i take it to the shop for work such as exhaust then they usually lift it from the frame which would mess up the paint.....

i got mine down to bare metal and used duplicolor professional undercoat, and applied 3 layers. it eventually dries really hard, then you can paint it whatever color you want.
 
I just got done doing my frame.... I used por-15 satin black brushed on. It cam out ok, had some dull spots here and there. They only think I see happening now as I re-install everything is if it wasnt to rusty or rough it is peeling away. I did my 73 radiator wall and after 7 yrs it is wrinkling around the bolt holes. Make sure it is roughed up good so it will have a lasting area to stick to.
 
From my experience I can recommend POR-15 for your frame, but 2 things to remember: 1) Thin it out with laquer thinner by 15 percent and spray it on instead of brushing. It will come out noticeably better. 2) After putting on a base coat of POR-15, put on a top coat. POR-15 is UV sensitive and it will start to fade very fast if left in the sun for any length of time. I've used POR 15 on my car and it is a very good product, but as mentioned above it works best on rusty rough surfaces. Once it starts to peel, you can pull off big sheets. I had the worst results the more I prepped. I am not sure what effect the primer would have on the POR-15 adhesion. Hve you thought about Lizard Skin? After seeing it on Musclecars, I would try it if I was doing it again.

Also, be careful getting POR 15 on you. The phrase that nothing gets it off except time, is almost true. Brake fluid is the only thing that eats it, and washing your hands in brake fluid sucks (makes a mess of the frame if you get a brake leak too).
 
i leanred a long time ago about getting it on your hands lol, i have some spots on my hands right now too....
