So basically i have a 8.5 10 bolt out of a 72 elcamino. I just the cover pattern and it has the tabs at the bottom but the odd part is that it has non c-clip axles which I know that some axles came that way but from what I have found they all have 30 spline axles with the non c-clip but I have one with 28 spline axles. It appears to be factory seeing that the tube looks normal and it is bolted to the backing plate. Any insight would be great. Thank you

The non-C clip 8.5 10 bolts are BOP style. 28 spline bolt in axleshafts with pressed on bearings and seals

If its a coil spring style its probably out of a pre-73 Buick Skylark/GS or Olds Cutlass/442

If its leaf spring style I would suspect a trans am rear from the late 70s

both of these measure about 55.5" backing plate to backing plate

forgive my ignorance of the 72 ElCamino chassis

the problem with those rears is trying to find gear sets for them

You are thinking about the BOP 10 bolt 8.2s from that era. Parts for the BOP 8.2 rears are limited and expensive, and often dont interchange between makes.

The 8.5" 10 bolts with the square ears on the case use the same gearsets and posi units up to and through the Buick Grand Nationals of the 80s. Lots of aftermarket support for these as well. Its a great rear, on par strength wise with a 12 bolt chevy.

do the axle shafts swap out with factory bolt in 30 spline shafts? I'm guessing they do just want to know for sure

No 30 spline axle is gonna swap into a 28 spline carrier.

I know for sure there are aftermarket 30 spline shafts for the application.

I suspect that the OEM 30 spline axleshafts will not be the correct length because they come from later model cars with different width rear axles. I mean we are probably talking about Buick Roadmasters form the early 90s for a 30 spline 8.5" 10 bolt right? I forget exactly when the OEMs went to 30 spline in the 8.5s

It is correct that you would also obviously need to change the carrier - posi or not - to accept the 30 splined axleshafts.

I will refer you to Jim Mitschke at JD Race and Restoration. www.jdrace.com
VERY knowledgeable and helpful guy. He specializes in rear axles and differentials, and he will have the correct info for you for sure.

I'm reading that a 72 El Camino came with 10 bolt chevy rear end so I'm thinking that the c clip eliminators are aftermarket....or someone has changed the rear end

I want to update my post, I said that Bolt in axles were in the late 70s TransAm rears. That is incorrect.

The TA 8.5s, with leaf spring perches, were C-clip style axleshafts.

Sorry for the goof up.
