like i mentioned in a previous post i found a set of posi 3.73 gears in an s-10 with a 7.5 inch 10 bolt rear end. I have been asking about how to go about getting those gears in my cutlass rear end, and have learned it would be somewhat difficult to do myself and would cost a couple hundred at a shop. So my new question what do u figure a welding shop would charge if I brought the axle out of my parts cutlass, and the axle out of the s-10 and asked them to cut all the mounts off the cutlass rear and put them on the s-10 rear???? would this be the easier and cheaper way to go or would gettin a shop to swap all the gears and stuff out be the easier what????

What kind of unit is it? Gov loc or Clutch? If its gov, don't bother. And I'm guessing the spline is 28?

I would look on ebay for a 26 spline, clutch style posi. I got a series 2 one and some 3.73 'thick' gears for a couple hundred bucks for my old El Camino.

how hard would it be to swap out the gov-lok for a posi??? I can get one from a buddy brand new in the box for dirt cheap (like 50 bucks)

It's the same work to install the Gov Lok as it is another kind of differential. It is inside the case where the two units differ. As for what to do, it depends on how much it's gonna cost you. If you have perpetually empty pockets and just wand something that is a step up, the 7.5 is OK. If it is gonna cost you $300 or more to put it all together, keep shopping for a G body 8.5. All of the G body units have good gears, the 73-77 "Colonnade" style A body 8.5 you have does not, according to a previous post. So, you would still have to do all of this anyways and would wind up spending almost as much as if you had sought out an 8.5 in the first place.

yeah i have found that my buddy has a malibu with 3.50 sumthings and has an auburn posi brand new in the box sitting in the trunk for it he wants 300 for the car with the posi but wouldn't see me just the posi, so i might buy his car swap the rear end with mine and put the posi in and then sell the car to someone else for a couple hundred, sounds't like the best plan i have come up with so far as it would be the easiest (it would bolt right in) and if i can sell the car after for 200 it would only cost me 100 bucks

You should be able to get more like $500 for a Malibu if it's a coupe. With the high value of scrap today, even a non runner goes for $500 at minimum, no matter what it is.
