im a newb to gbodyforum i have an 84 cutlass 3.8l im in the process of putting a turbo 350 where my turbo 250c previously was. i bought my 350 from somebody who had it sitting around for about 5 years. when he pulled the transmission it had been recently rebuilt and he had bought the car (an 81 malibu) from someone who built it up to handle alot of torque. when i got the trans home i pulled the pan and found milky trans fluid in the pan and orange residue on my valve body. it should be easy to clean up. but the trans is dry, is there anything i should do before i bolt it up? possibly pull it apart and resoak the friction discs. any seals besides the obvious ones on outside of the trans and the filter. really need some advice please help... 😀

I'm not sure about the orange stuff (unless it's rust) but, the milky fluid says water got in there. I'd tear it down and go through it. :wax:

yeah its rust im replacing the valve body bolts they got it the worst but the body itself has just a thin film and its only on the bottom of the body not up the side it doesnt look like it spread anywhere else. im going to pull it of and clean it up with some emery cloth and a parts washer im mostly worried up the trans itself being dry and dont want to burn it up after i put it in. the guy didnt plug the dipstick hole properly so thats gotta be how the water got in. should i pull the pump and drive out to relube or will it be fine thats what i want to know. how long should it take to do and what tools beside a slide hammer to pull the pump out, will i need.

The biggest thing I would be concerned about is making sure none of the hard parts have rust. My 400 had a rust pitted drum that I had to replace. That means a tear down. Of course, you don't have to disassemble the clutch packs, just remove and inspect them. Then again, it's less than $100 for a rebuild kit and if your there already, why not.
