So I am rebuilding my first engine, a 72 olds 350 and right now I'm in this process of preassembly. I just test fitted the cam and spun it around a few times. I spun freely for the most part and then I removed it to check the cam bearings for high spots or scratches. I saw a few scratches and shiny spots and but am not sure if those were from spinning the cam or from the cam hitting it during the installation/removal. But my question is do I really need to use a bearing scraper ? Or is there something else I can do to make sure the cam spins freely enough?

U installed a new cam and bearings? or just a new cam? Use good quality cam breakin lube when installing it....Lucas makes it and its sold at Advance/Autozone...

Yes, I installed a new cam and bearings. So I shouldnt worry about using a bearing scraper on the cam bearings as long as I put some assembly lube when I do the final installation of the cam?

Im not sure that a new cam and bearings would require a scraper....Bearings are coated when new to protect them and that coating comes off after the motor has been broken in. You may want to get another opinion on that....im just not sure.

The only time i use the bearing scraper on cam bearings is to give them a little chamfer for installiation. Upon installiation I use a old test cam for a trial fit. If the cam goes in good and spins fine with no drag yer good to go bro.

I think it has a little bit of drag but not much.
