I have a bone stock '86 442 with about 65k on it. I just replaced the plugs, cap and rotor and wanted to change out the stock HEI coil with a Crane PS91 HEI coil I have. I understand they make two different GM HEI coils. One has red and white wires and one has red and yellow wires. The stock 442 coil has the white wire while the Crane PS 91 has the yellow wire. Does anyone know what the difference is between these two coils?

Thanks...

Tom

From what I understand one of them is for chevys. the 2 different colors are supposedly matched to 2 different control modules, and using the incorrect color coil will fry control modules.

If memory serves, yellow is for non-computer HEI's, white is for Computer controlled HEI's.

I just remembered a long drawn out post about this over on the PY forums. Here is the link. It states the given reason for the 2 different colors(actually has matching pick up coils, not mudules) and then people basically try to prove or disprove if you can really interchange them or not. I didnt read through it all but your answer is in there somewhere 🙂 http://forums.performanceyears.com/...?t=408761&highlight=red+yellow+white+hei+coil
