So a bit of a back story as i lurk around alot i have a 88 cutty that has 24k on it and is in 100% original condition and as near perfect as it gets with out being perfect. My problem comes in that it has an exhaust leak, a preatty bad one at that, sounds like its comming just south of the headers to me not sure havent investigated much. Im not sure if i want to just get it fixed and leave it as stock as it was before or if i want to upgrade it a bit and put a new carb maybe a set of heads and a cam while im at it what kind of gains do you guys see typicly and/or would the car retain later collectibility and value staying stock?

These cars are a dime a dozen. They're everywhere and can be made back to stock fairly easily. I don't think the cutlass will ever be a high dollar car. Maybe a performance version, but not the normal trim levels, there were just too many made.

Why did you buy the car? If it was because of the nice original condition, keep it that way. If you bought it for some other reason, go ahead with the mods. But if it ain't broke...

Which motor do you have?

I wouldn't plan on any added collectablilty with any of these pooch motors.
Maybe if it were an H/O or 442... If you think it may help though, then just stash the original motor in the corner of your garage.
I wouldn't bother putting any mods on the original motor, as gains will be minimal, and money would be better spent elsewhere.

Fix your exhaust and enjoy cruising a nice car while you save your money and gather parts for the swap of your choosing.

what are the "normal" trim levels you see in these cars mine is a brougham (sp?) and what not the motor is the 307 and as far as everything i have all orginal paper work from 88-present more or less and actually the car was given to me by my grandparents as a gift for my 21st and they had bought it a few years back from my great aunt and uncle it had been their sunday church car since it was new i supose i will just have it fixed to stock i wasnt looking for much go out of my mustang is what that is for

Normal trim levels, like the base, supreme, brougham. If it isn't a special edition performance wise, it won't be worth much in the future. But it sounds like a very nice original car, it'd be a shame to change it up. 21 years old with 24K miles is rare for these cars.
