hey guys so i am getting ready to put the car on the road and i am going to transfer the ownership over but i have lost it. but i have my used car package and a bill of sale i just have not transferred them yet how do i go about getting the ownership and car in my name?

can you contact the owner who you bought the car from? A replacement registration is only about $10 but I think it's only the registered owner who can get it. Why not try to see if they will transfer the car over with what you have if it contains the sellers signature and info.

like GP stated only the registered owner can get a reprint and they wont do anything without it.

wouldn't it be easier and quicker to go to service ontario and ask them instead of trying to find your answer here or on some other forum?. And it still doesn't matter what any of use say, you'll still have to go to service ontario to find out if we are right or wrong.

i have gone to service ontario and i have tried to find and locate the last owner but no luck i am hoping someone here has gone through what i am doing and could guide me.

if you have gone to service ontario is this what they asked for?

Register a used vehicle
You must register your name as the new owner of the vehicle within 6 days of the purchase.

To register the vehicle, you need to visit a ServiceOntario centre and bring the following:

  • proof of insurance
  • your Ontario Driver’s Licence
  • used vehicle information package (UVIP)
  • bill of Sale (you can use the bottom of the used vehicle information package, as there is a section specifically for this)
  • Safety Standards Certificate (SSC), if applicable
  • emissions test (if applicable)
  • owner’s permit with the completed Application for Transfer portion on the back
  • odometer reading information

I have been thru it. Bought a great little car from a friend of a cousin and he said he couldn't find the ownership but he would get it to me. I did a bunch of work to it ( valve seals, brakes, tires and about 10 hours in detailing ) and he still could not find it. I then went to MTO to try and get it switched to my name. I bought the stupid used vehicle package and showed them the Bill of Sale and they would not budge. Tried to get the seller to get it re-printed and he dragged his feet. I ended up cutting the car up for scrap and selling off what I could because I could not get it into my name. Without the ownership I couldn't sell it or register the car or even scrap it as a whole.
Lesson learned. When you buy a car swap it into your name right away even if it's only to "unfit" status. Depending on the clerk you may be even able to get a 10 day trip permit if you show proof of insurance. This way you find out if there are liens against the car as well.

Short of that you can place a lien against the vehicle ( abandoned, storage ect... ) yourself and try and claim ownership. From what I understand ( GP would likely know better ) the attorney will attempt to contact the orig owner ( for a fee of course ) using various methods. If no response then you can claim the vehicle as your own. However if they do claim ownership you lose the vehicle and all the repairs you have done.

Obviously cheaper to do your best to find the original owner

Axis beat me to it....I can send the owner a Notice of Intent to Sell for storage charges under the Repair and Storage Lien Act. and have the car transferred into your name. It should take less than a month
