What are the pros and cons to running open headers dealing with performance? Are there any hazards to running open headers? I've heard that it's damaging to the valvetrain.

You can burn your vavles out, they need the pressure wave from the exhaust system. Now you could run straight pipes from your open headers and that would be enough

Ok. After that driveshaft snapped last time it did a number on my full exhaust. So what I'm going to do is salvage it. Just shorten up the length of the exhaust and put some dumps right behind the mufflers.

when runnning open headers, there are some damaginf affects to the engine.Lets say you have the car with open headers all warmed up,or you just took it for a drive, well the engine is hot right?once you shut off the engine, your letting cold air into the headers from underneath the car into the engine and then its touching the hot exhaust valves, once they cold air touches the hot valves, they're most likely to crack. It ok to run open headers for just a start up,or a quick dyno run i suppose, but not as a street driven vehicle.I will be running open headers when i finally start up my 402hp 350 olds this monday 8) .If you want loud, run heades with a short piece of straight pipe on the car.The only thing you'll hve to worry about then is the sound police

I doubt you'd have any issues running open headers. The problem comes in the length of pipe/tubing off the heads. Open manifolds is a bad idea because the end of the manifold isn't far enough away from the heads exhaust ports.
Headers obviously have longer tubes before they are open to the elements which is similar to having manifolds with open down pipes.
