I widened stock GN & stock 442 wheels to 8" but that is to run 275s & 295s. You can still safely run 255s on the stock 15x7s. Plus in 87 they were aluminum unless you have an older ralley on it or something. A good posi in conjunction with an air bag and some lower control arms will help a lot. I would run it like it is though just pay more attention to your mph than your actual et for now.
good point,,, ill prolly leave the car the way it is now for quite a while, cuz my next project is a truck, which will eat up alot of money. Im trying to find a 87 or older 4wd chevy/gmc crew cab dually. something i could use to haul stuff and people and be good in the snow up here in rochester.
i have a home built zz4. tbi short blockwith zz4 cam and heads, edelbrock intake and hedman headers. 86 grand prix le 700r4 , 3.73:1 posi axle. on strret tires and through 2 1/2 dual exhaust it runs [email protected] at milan dragway. it is approx. 180 mile round trip to milan plus around 20 runs and i still get 16.5 mpg. i have gotten 20 mpg on the freeway.
I havn't had a zz4 but a few years back I bought a zz3 crate engine with fastburn alum. heads. put it in a 75 blazer with 38" tall tires and a four speed ran incredibly well I was very impressed with it for a crate engine. If I remember at the time they were getting ready to introduce the zz4 and it had a little more power. All i know is it took a MASSIVE amount of abuse for me to blow it up.
Just put zz4 in my 84 cutlass.... Started right up..... Sounds real strong... Just having problems with the carb. I think... It has a holley 750 that came with the ready to run zz4 kit. It back fires through the carb if you snap the throttle, and seems to bog down. but if u slowly rev the engine and raise the rpm its fine. It idles fine and seems smooth at higher rpms, but if u try to rev the engine quick it bogs down and back fires through the carb.... Any ideas?
i'd start with the basics. check your timing, valve lash etc. bogging on throttle snap usually means that your getting too much fuel or a weak ignition. backfires through the carb are usually timing.
