I removed the factory 307 out of my 1987 cutlass 442 and the 1970 motor I bought with extra goodies had a nice high amp chrome alternator. but the regulator plug from the 87 car is not the same. Can I just change the plug and use the chrome alternator or do I have to use the alternator that matches the car? Also what do I do with all the extra wires? LOL. Any other parts I have to keep that match the car?
We need a bit more information first; you WILL be using an Olds 350, yes? I know it sounds like a basic question, but some people don't realize the difference, so we have to get that out of the way first.
Assuming you are going to use a 1970 Olds 350 engine, I have a suggestion or two.
First, take everything off of the front of your 307 and use it on your 350. The water pump. all the accesories, everything. Re-use or use new motor mounts for your 307 as well. Now the engine fits in there exactly as it should, and you won't have trouble with belts and hoses.
Do NOT use the little 307 exhaust manifolds on your 350. They are just too small in the primaries. Use dual exhaust Oldsmobile manifolds or headers.
Get an HEI Olds distributor, from 1975-80, with vacuum advance. Use the same power wire from your 307's HEI distributor to power yours up. Put the tach wire where it goes (right next to the power wire) if you have a tach on the dash.
You should install the water temp gauge sending unit and oil pressure gauge sending unit from your 307 onto your 350. The oil pressure sending unit should fit no problem; the water temp sender may have to go in a slightly different place or have a pipe adapter to put it in a different plug hole. The intake manifolds are different, so the plugs aren't in exactly the same spot all the time. Put your heater control valve from your 307 onto your 350 as well.
If your 350 uses a Quadrajet carb, you should be able to hook up your cruise control as well.
it's all in and runs great . having a trans issue but I think its a spring missing from the detent connection in the transmission itself. taking it to a trans shop later this week.
