My limited mechanical aptitude just got tested to the max by a project that SHOULD be simple. Changing valve cover gaskets on my California 79 Elco with a 350 and air . what a Pain In the A--. I tried 2 different new valve covers, they wouldn't fit under the one A/C bracket. I never saw Chevy S/block v/covers that are sloped on the one side. Or all the crap that had to be removed.

Sometimes it's what seems like the simplest things are the ones that really get ya. I've had to learn to try not to be rushed and when faced with sh*t like that, I take a deep breath and remember clichés like "where there's a will there's a way" and stupid crap like that....😉

might be a stupid idea but could you shim out the ac bracket with washers to get clearance without screwing up belt geometry?
