Yeah gotcha. I haven’t found any clear yet other than professional 2K catalyzed stuff that doesn’t make raw aluminum look like that.

Best suggestion I can make is automotive sandpaper on a block. The grit will be a tough call, the coarser it is, the quicker it’ll knock down the surface imperfections. But if you go too coarse right off the bat, it might not have the look you want. Then your going over it with progressively finer and finer grits to remove the previous grits scratches.

Also, aluminum is an extremely soft material, so it’s gonna clog up the finer grits of sandpaper you use. You’ve already hit it with 320, I’d maybe back up to 220 and see how you like it.

If it’s nice straight lines you’re after, you’re gonna have to really concentrate on making straight repeatable motions when sanding. No other way around it. If you don’t care about the brushed finish, you could always hit it with a DA (dual action) sander, and it’ll give you a nice grainy finish, almost like if it was sandblasted.

Unconventional but creative. Hey if it works, go for it. But I’m usually out when it comes to using wood tools on hot rods.
