I have been noticing for the past week, that when I go to park my Regal, sometimes I have to bring the shifter (floor shift) back down into neutral and then back into park, in order for the key to go fully into the "OFF" position. Today when I went to get out, I noticed that no matter how many times I tried the key will not fully go into the off position, and the shifter even in "PARK" will not hold. It seems like "PARK" really does not engage at all. I checked to see if it would start in "NEUTRAL" and it does. Does anyone have any ideas on this before I start digging in? Or any similar situations to add their .02. i appreciate any information once again GBody Forum, you've been a help in the past!

sounds like worn shifter linkage bushings. If you grab the lower part of the steering column cover and turn it counter clockwise you key should go into the off position without any problems.

I tried, that didn't seem to help it any. ignition lock cylinder didn't budge a bit.

That last help post got me to thinking. I located and followed the linkage all the way to the firewall. Right at the top of the firewall there is a tang. Its seemed to be really out of adjustment. I flipped it clockwise if you're standing at the front of the vehicle. Went back into the cab and the key turned right into "LOCK" position. Now, the problem I have here is, the floor shifter, doesn't want to come out of park, it seems to be in a bind. I think, (but you know what they say about thinking) I need to re-adjust my whole linkage. Could this be the issue. There seemed to be some play in the whole setup. For it to allow me to do that with it connected to the transmission, and the shifter not move? Do you have any correct procedures on adjusting that linkage?

Getting linkage bushings too. Sloppy.

I would detatch the cable from the bracket on the transmission and see if the cable moves back and forth smoothly

I sure did, I inspected the cable from the shifter portion. It worked out great. I can see, that it where the manual adjuster is connected to the linkage by the column. For some reason it will not go back all the way to the upright position. That seems to be whats not allowing free movement on my lock cylinder. With your help, you have put me in the right direction now. I am confused now on why that part attached to the column won't go all the way back up. When I adjust everything, it runs through the gears perfect, until you get back to park. The shifter works, but at the column, by the firewall, it always gets hung one notch below the lock position. I pop the hood, and manually flip that lever up and my lock cylinder locks and the wheel does too??? I double check the trans side and the transmission is still in park with the park pawl engaged.

Im going to the dealer tomorrow and ordering the GM#1377083 Shifter Linkage Bushings. There's way too much play in that entire assembly. When I looked at another post. I am missing too many. This could very well be just like you advised, that is why I am not getting complete travel. Everything works proper until we get to park, where it needs an extra push, that push Im not getting! We just need to do this right, and get bushings installed and get it snugged up. Then proceed with adjustments. Do you agree?
