How difficult is it to replace? Apparently the elbow is cracked, and won't pass smog without replacing it. Seems like it's fairly easy to remove, but thought I'd get someone's input before doing it myself.

Also, any ideas what would cause an engine to produce a high hydrocarbon reading? My 88 Cutlass Supreme (w/a 307 engine) failed the smog test because of a 102 reading @ 15mph. FYI: The max HC allowed in Ca is 93, with 53 being average. Interestingly enough, it passed the HC test at 25 mph, but not by much. Average @ 25mph is 39 with 63 being the max. My measured reading was 62.

On a side note, I had the dealer pour some liquid in the gas tank to break down some chemical buildup in the gas tank and carburetor. I wonder if this would cause a high HC reading?

Use the search function in the upper right corner of the forum & look up this topic it has been talked about several times and one of the topics has a diagram & some pictures of basically everything you need to know to tune your emissions equipment up but people are not going to come in this topic & repeat themselves they're sore on this topic. Another thing that might help is if you can find pure gas without 10% ethanol for the test you are more likely to pass. The breather hose is that rubber hose coming out of the air cleaner it should be in plain sight all you have to do is replace it and you should probably go ahead and replace the pcv valve itself before wasting more money @ the smog station if you aren't sure its working & leak-free too because it's only a few dollars.
