Pellet stoves

was talking to my brother about this,we grew up having wood stoves in our lives and still do.the only maintance we've experienced is changing a broken stone inside and that's only happened once in 20 plus years.and not all stoves have them but as a whole they're a pretty bullet proof operation.having the blower's a nice option, makes a big difference.

I might just be overthinking it. My only utility is electricity and I know the furnace is a big variable. I'm comfortable with the thermostat at 70 but it's about $100-150 bump over running at 65 during the cold months.

If I could justify the savings over, say, 10 years and actually feel warm, I'd probably do it. Heat = fuel = $. I guess that's what socks and blankets are for.

I'm going to quiz a couple local guys I know who run pellets and see if they think it's worth it.

Thanks for the info, guys.

consider what your times worth to you.there's decent effort in burning wood, depending where it comes from(live or dead)it's gotta be split, moved(sometimes twice)stacked, clean up the area after etc etc.in the past few years supplied wood has become almost equal to other sources of energy.it's almost not worth it in some case to use an additional $ource compared to turning up the t-stat and going back about your business..

I had a close friend that cut, chopped, stacked, and burnt wood. Convinced him to go find some already split. He said no, it's too expensive. Ended up he found some kids that were selling it, not only cheaper than he could buy full logs for, but it was already split and they stacked it I'm his dump trailer too!. He usually spent two weeks a year cutting and stacking, now he spends two hours picking up ten face cords, for less $ than he was spending before....

I hear every word you're saying. I stacked uncountable chords of wood when I was a kid. Split plenty too. I was surfing CL yesterday and it looks like it runs $200-300/chord and most guys offer delivery for not much more. I would estimate that I would probably be in the 5 chord range per season -- so lets call it $1500. Not sure what that would translate to in pellets. The upside of pellets is I have a patio with a sliding door about 10-15' from where I'd probably place a stove in the basement. I'd probably stack wood around the corner or leave it on a trailer nearby. Just a little more work/walking for wood.

So really, your argument about twisting the thermostat makes good sense. But nothing beats that wood heat on a cold day. Heat pump sucks. In fact, the heating elements in the furnace don't even kick on unless it can't keep up. Either way, you stand under a heating vent and it feels like cold air blowing on you. The natural gas furnace at The Compound at least blew warm.

I have a wood burner in my garage I bring the pallets home from work and cut them up and burn them The wood is free just my time to cut it up with a circular saw
Dealing with the ashes and the dust and having to clean everything all the time isn’t worth it
In time I will switch to propane the other garage is getting propane so I will just piggyback off of that tank
