The reverse cooling does make the LT1 different but doesn't really affect how it runs, just how it's cooled. Aluminum heads and computer timing control are probably more responsible for the ability to run higher CR than the cooling direction. To many people the 9.4 is actually more attractive because it allows you to run less expensive fuel. I own/have owned several LT1s myself. The reason I mentioned the roller cam is because the Vortec has it too. I was trying to give another less expensive and easier option to end up at the same end result. Since his car already has a 305, I figured the Vortec might be a good way to go. He already has the LT1 so I understand why he might want to use it. LT1s are great but, personally, I think they shine best with EFI.bigdan said:DRIVEN said:Honestly, you can't really call it an LT1 anymore . The injection system and optispark are what makes the engine what it is. If you are going to remove all those pieces you may be money and work ahead to just sell it as-is and spend the money on a Vortec 350. The Vortec heads were based off the LT1 port design. Aside from that you get 4-bolt mains, a more pump-gas friendly 9.4 compression ratio, conventional style timing cover, conventional water pump and accessory drive, roller cam and a common intake bolt pattern. I guess with enough surgery you can make a dude look like a chick -- but it's still a dude. If you like chicks, look for a chick. Way less work, right  ?
sorry to contradict you but what makes an LT1 , is the reverse coolant flow taht permits the 10.5 to 1 cr that a regular ( vortec )engine cant attain without some gripes !
the LT1 is roller cam too !
Longroof, The ZZ3 & ZZ4 are much closer to the TPI L98s than the LT1s
