im not quite sure which it is but its somthin with those to things. ive never had rear go, ive had trans on its way out but this didnt show anysigns like the other. the fluid doesnt even smell to burnt, the cars got some milage on it though. its an 87 monte ls, 200r4 with the stock 7.5 non posi aint sure what gears. i left my house and went dont the road and somthin didnt feel right. got down the road hung a left after stopping and felt a massive vibration, kept goin and the vibration came and went, i knew a spot where i could over and look at it, and well it barley made it there all of a sudden there was no power bein put to the ground. got it back home barely, and put it on stands in the rear, started it put it in gear and it started makin a metalic kinda clanging sound which i belive is comin from the rear i believe. unless its somhow in the trans and traveling down the drive shaft, but i wouldnt think ited sound like this outta an auto. if anyone can help thanks, ive only had the car a week and i aint even beat on it or nothin, i got a kid on the way and i bought this car in hopes ited be a way to keep a g body but have a decent family car at the same time, i hope it aint gonna fall apart on me, its a pretty straight car.

Is the drive shaft turning? If it is and the wheels are not turning, the rear end is shot.

drain the fluid in the rearend end, if it comes out soapy or really bubbly the rear end is on its way out

alright after the initial panic a buddy of mine came over to have second set of eyes. he had a rear go in his monte ss and says he really thinks it seems more like the trans. itllbbut move on the ground in 1st,2nd, and reverse somtimes. 3rd and 4th do not like to move and when you put it park it wants to move like its in gear and somtimes jumps then engages. on the stands with the engine off, if we put it in gear and spin the tires by hand the drivve shaft spins freely with the wheels. i wont get to look at the rear fluid or trans fluid in the pan till tommorow probably. if its the trans we have to possible transmissions around for that swap to, i just dont wanna start pullin stuff till i know for sure what it is. thanks again.

well we definatly narrowed it to the trans cause once its underload on the ground th drive shaft doesnt spin. dropped the pan and theres not much junk in there nor much in the filter, im thinkin the pump or converter or its just fried. i have a 200r4 out of a caprice thats been sittin in my basment for 4 or so years, a 700r4 out of a camaro that i actually drove for a while but the trans has been in my basement for about 2.5 years, and a th400 thats had fresh performance build on it and not alot of miles definatly a good transmission. while the th400 seems great to put in its a lot of trans for the 305 and i think itll soak up the little pwer it has, and ill lose milage over the other 200r4 i have. the 700r4 is out cause its just gonna take to much to make it work. any opininions on usin either the 200r4 or th 400? pros cons? thanks

The 200 would be my choice. You have it, it is a direct replacement, and it will be more efficient than the Th 400. Just be sure you don't reuse the converter from the other trans as it is most likely full of contamination.

thats what i was thinkin. and have decided on my father told me it should be just fine as long as i replace the front and rear seals as they have probably dried out with it sittin empty so long. doesnt sound to difficult. i plan on just buyin a new converter cause i dont know if i have the other one. it should be alright after sittin right? it came outta a running driving caprice owned by some lilittle ol lady.
