I got a 1985 Cutlass Supreme about a year ago and I have 55k miles on it. I changed the transmission filter and flush my transmission myself about a year ago. It runs pretty good but needs the carb rebuilt and a couple other stupid things (antenna motor went out, RPM gauge is useless etc.) Any way, I have no way of telling how high my RPM's are when I shift. When I'm in second gear, my transmission seems to take a awhile (but not slip) to shift into 3rd. The RPM gauge is buried from 60-75 miles an hour when at WOT. Any other time the car shifts fine but I'm worried that my transmission is holding out the gear too long. My TV cable was a bit loose, but I just tightened it up today. Could this be an internal problem? I'd rather not blow this junk transmission because I'd like to keep my car original. Please let me know if you guys can help. 🙂

I had the same problem with my hydramatic, check for loose vacuums and replace the ground (if it's not grounded, bolt one from the frame just for kicks). I'm trashing mine as soon as I can afford it though.

RPM gauge is useless

i'm missing something here.
and by the way the 200-r4, 200c, 350, 400 and others are all Turbo-Hydromatic.

if its a hydramatic 200 like mine its junk

The rpm gauge has nothing to do with the transmission, it runs off of the distributor.
