Could someone please state which of the two, LARGER or smaller diameter on a 1986 Steering box is the high pressure side. There is so much conflicting information. I stand on the drivers side of the car where the steering box is. The holes are offset and they are different diameters. Please someone tell me...or is it a secretthat fit 2 out od 3 They are clearly visible. I have a half dozen hoses and adaptors to get from a 68 Olds 350 pump to a 1986 STEERING GEAR. I am getting closer, then someone tells me the high is on the fender side. WHAT THE H? LARGE OR SMALL HOLE????? Keep it simple! I have all I need in parts!

As a follow-up to this, when using an adapter to go to -6, does the adapter going into the box or pump for that matter have to be the inverted flare o ring or will a regular adapter work?

Because the adapter and o-ring make the seal, I would say that you need the inverted flare adapter or there may be leakage under pressure. The two types make it simpler depending on your hose thread. New boxes have metric threads, while old hose applications have SAE and inverted flares. if you have metric hose threads with the o-ring fittings, they should just thread in. If you have the old style inverted flare, you can use the small brass insert. If your hose has SAE thread then you need to use the threaded with the o-ring that allows conversion to the old way. Mine was made harder by the generation skips from 1968 pump to 1986 box. I had a correct for 1986 return hose so did not need the 2nd threaded adaptor but the little insert worked the charm.

High Pressure Hose comes from the pump to a T brass fitting for the AC cutoff switch if AC Equipped. Low pressure is the closest to the rag joint coupling. and is not high pressure hose and uses a regular hose clamp to secure at the pump's rear.
