power steering pump line removal

on an old mustang i drained the fluid and removed the ps belt.
Drove like manual steering.

stupid question, why does it need to be looped? I'm assuming the fluid comes from the same place as it goes, so why can't you just plug up both holes on the steering box?

Also, it's not under high pressure with the pump removed, correct? Therefore some regular hose with screw driver clamps should be fine?

I was told to keep as much fluid as I could in the hose to keep it lubed so that is what i did. I have never tried to just plug it but it might work. I only have a little 6"-8" loop. To answer your last question YES you can just use fuel hose and clamps if you want. I have done that many times.

I did my power steering set up similiar to nightmares. However it has taken it's toll on the gearbox. there is some slop at the moment.

That's weird I have never had a problem with mine yet. Did you make sure there was plenty of fluid in the hose when you hooked it up or did you leave it dry and or plug the holes. I think you can adjust the slop out of the steering if you had to. Its been a long time so I can't remember how to do it but I did it years ago.
