Did some work on my car, had to pull the PS exhaust manifold. There was no gasket. Yeah, that sounds legit.
I was shocked cause it didn't have a noticeable leak.
They also used about a whole tube of red RTV to seal the connection from the I-pipe to the cat.
Oil pressure sender was cracked, so they put a ton of silicone on it and wrapped it in tape....that was fun having the car drop about a quart of oil per minute, when that rig-job failed.

Anyone heard of people slapping on manifolds or headers without gaskets??
Just doesn't make any sense

Don't get me started..how about copper tubing instead of a brake hose? Roofing shingles under the carpets to hide the holes? Oil drain plug put on with an impact gun? Gutted cat (why won't it pass emissions?). Block of wood duct taped to the brake pedal to correct a low pedal. ALL wiring twist-n-taped (can't afford crimps?) An inner tube in a tubeless tire. I could go on forever.

Oh Do Tell! I enjoyed the ones you've already mentioned and am looking forward to the others not yet mentioned!

Many engines did not use an exhaust manifold gasket from the factory

+1 Chevy has not used gaskets on exhaust manifolds for a long time, at least on engines with cast iron heads, I think the aluminum headed engines do use gaskets.

^^^ X2

I've seen house light switches used in place of toggle switches, coffee cans connected together to make exhaust pipes,2x4s in the coil springs to fix coil sag, aluminum foil tape with fiberglass making patch/body panels thats all I can think of right now

Here's a couple of my favorite ones.

Had a Chevy S10 the PO clamped a 2x4 in the front caliper when the bolt tab broke off, then duct taped it to the upper a-arm, a car with a plywood floor patch under the seat, drywall screws holding the seat in, leaf springs held together with a c-clamp, a extension cord with a household light switch inline taped to the side if the car, from the battery to the back if the car, to turn the fuel pump on, because the inertia switch had been tripped, the first one was I car I bought, the rest I found doing state inspections
